On friends wanting to cosplay the same characters

Where’s the problem there?

Within my circle of friends, when people have plans to do the same cosplay, we have fun as each other’s clones, choose different versions, or take turns being that character for different events or shoots.

In these examples, Miguel and I take turns being Sasuke. I did the prepubescent version and he did the Shippuden costume. And in the last photo we try to see what it would look like if we switched Shippuden characters. And act like a couple of butts. China and I also took turns being Naruto, and Miguel and I took turns being Ichigo. It was fun! We got to cosplay more characters we wanted. When Miguel cosplayed Ichigo, I could be Uryu. And when I was Ichigo, he could cosplay Urahara.

Sometimes when two of my friends who are the same size both plan to do a character, they help each other put the costume together and take turns wearing it. It would mean less work for both of them, and they both get to enjoy the cosplay.

I’ve heard of people fighting over character choices, and I just don’t get it. Nobody has any right to claim a copyrighted character as their own, and they can’t stop other people from liking them and cosplaying them. I’ve heard of people forbidding their friends from cosplaying characters they plan to do. (WHY WOULD YOU DO THAT) Are they scared that other people will compare them? Sooooooo whaaaaaaat? Put your friend’s feelings before the opinion of a bunch of strangers!

In general, I figure people are always going to talk, and I’m not always going to like what they’re going to say (and that’s normal!), so I just stopped concerning myself with what they thought and focused on enjoying myself with people I care about. It certainly has worked for me!
